The globally acclaimed Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars return with their third studio album, Radio Salone, out April 24, 2012. Produced by roots reggae, soul and Afrobeat guru Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, (Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Amy Winehouse, Easy Star All Stars, Antibalas) and recorded in Brooklyn’s Dunham Studios, Radio Salone marks the band’s most musically sophisticated collection of songs to date. The album is the follow-up to the band’s 2010 albumRise & Shine, which was the #1 album of the year on the World Music Charts Europe.

Out of dark times, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have always made music rife with hopeful messages and joyful rhythms. Radio Salone is no different, but this time it feels like a milestone album for the group. When they stepped into the studio for the Radio Salone sessions, they began laying down tracks with a definitive vintage African vibe, connecting traditional West African sounds with roots reggae in ways that they had never before explored. Employing analog technology, the band used mid-70s era microphones and 16-track tapes. With the limited takes that tape imposes on the recording process, there was often just one chance to create perfection. But perfection to this band means embracing unplanned nuances, allowing the visceral qualities of music to shine, letting the process play out in real time. The mics don’t shut off between the album’s tracks – an invitation to the listener to join the band on their creative journey.

Having persevered through the horrors of the Sierra Leonean civil war, band leader Reuben Koroma and the group continue to musically evolve in exciting ways, well past their jam sessions in the Guinean refugee camps and the rawness of their first recordings in their native capital of Freetown. The songs are infused with intricate dub elements not found in their earlier material and interludes are featured as part of the album flow for the first time. From the hollow echoes of the congoma (also known as the marimba – a percussion instrument with wooden keys and resonators) in album opener “Chant It Down” to the bubbling rhythm of lead single “Mother In Law” to the irresistible hook of “Big Fat Dog,” there are thrilling discoveries around every corner. While the band initially gained fame through the power of their story and message, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have since become one of Africa’s most active touring bands, and the years of experience are reflected in the virtuosity of their performance on Radio Salone.

The Rasputina group has existed for more than 20(0) years. Melora Creager founded it to meet like-minded young women (excellent cellists that wanted to play rock music and wear historical costumery). Although often mistakenly lumped into passing fancies, Rasputina manages to survive and defy categorization by maintaining a child-like delight in music-making alongside a clear & true integrity.

Rasputina has made something like 8 albums. It’s hard to count. Do live recordings count as albums? And what about rarity compilations? In addition to Rasputina albums, Melora Creager has released a number of limited edition short-works.

Pictured are current members:
Daniel DeJesus – cellist and vocalist extraordinaire, 3 year Gold-Star Rasputina member
Melora Creager – founder & directress, cello, voice, banjo & etc |
Dawn Miceli – celebrity podcaster in her own right, percussion/singer

Ezra Furman & the Harpoons have made numerous album of the year lists with their debut Banging Down the Doors and sophomore release Inside the Human Body. They have gained critical acclaim for performances with Lou Reed at South by Southwest, Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Walkmen, Spoon, and Delta Spirit, as well as at major festivals such as Lollapalooza. They have attained international notoriety by soaring to the number-one spot on European radio stations and playing to thousands at Barcelona’s Primavera music festival. Ezra personally embarked on the quixotic feat of recording an original and personalized song for every person who bought a special self-released EP. On top of all of this, Ezra Furman & the Harpoons deliver live performances that will leave you buzzing with excitement.

Furman gallops and crashes around the stage like an asylum-bound Buddy Holly complete with endearing hiccups and frightening tics. He not only christens every tour with a nom de rock, but also titles each individual gig. Furman’s witty and effusive conversations with the audience, along with his heightened attention to the crowd’s prevailing mood and the shows named like children, creates an extremely personalized feel for every performance. The band grinds out riffs stoically and belts out harmonies spiritedly as they lay the aural ties to support the verbal locomotion of Furman as he careens and caroms about, filling the room with the boiling-hot emotional steam of a fully bared soul.

The guys in the Band Of Heathens are fond of saying they became a unit by accident. But that’s like saying the Big Bang was an accident. Unplanned, maybe, but hardly random. One might even argue that a kind of destiny was involved. The merger of singer/songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist and Colin Brooks, with bassist Seth Whitney and drummer John Chipman, from their respective solo careers and bands may not be akin to a cosmic explosion, but their album, One Foot in the Ether, offers irrefutable evidence that they were meant to be together — and have evolved into a solid entity worthy of the comparisons they receive to the Black Crowes, the Band and Little Feat.

The Americana Music Association’s 2010 list of Top 100 Albums of the Year found Band of Heathens “One Foot In The Ether” slotted in at #7!

Lionize performs over 200 dates a year, having been tapped to open up for bands such as CLUTCH, GALACTIC, STEEL PULSE and BAD BRAINS. Lionize also pulled double duty backing and supporting Lee “Scratch” Perry, garnering a slew of positive reviews.

Lionize takes pride in their original sound, DIY work ethic and fiery live shows. DESTRUCTION MANUAL, (produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox) finds the band continuing its exploration of the stoner-rock, funk and reggae landscapes.

This twelve-song LP calls to mind classic reggae and rock albums with a decidedly modern spin. The band’s foundation on drums and bass are LaMel Randolgh and Henry Upton who hint at a rock-and-roll version of Sly and Robbie joined with the classic scorching Hammond organ and key sounds from Chris Brooks and the commanding guitar and vocal work of Nathan Bergman. Reggae heavyweights David Hinds and Selwyn Brown of Steel Pulse lend their vocal talents on the track Killers and Crooks as well as stalwart guitar work from Tim Sult of Clutch who also lends his talents throughout this record.

Between recording in Kingston, Jamaica with Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse), collaborating on and off stage with artists such as Ozomatli and Chali 2na, and supporting heavy metal favorites Kylesa and cKy, the band begins 2011 on quite an auspicious note.

Despite its lack of mainstream press, the band’s loyal following expands daily. With DESTRUCTION MANUAL set to be released on Hardline Entertainment early Feb. 2011 and tours supporting Authority Zero and Streetlight Manifesto on the horizon, Lionize continues to turn ears as a novel addition to the sonic terrain of rock and roll with its train of heavy riffs, wailing organ, and pulsating reggae.

VIDEO (WILCO COVER)>>>
“I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK6VILyHVDE

What does post-punk soul look like? Six and a half feet of raw emotion and sweat, with one leather boot planted in gutsy R&B, the other in taut minimalist grind. Snarling at the crowd beneath an afro pompadour, while indulging in a sly wink, singing to you directly, and here to make you dance. What does post-punk soul look like? It looks like JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound.

JC Brooks was born the son of a Jersey funk diva, his voice erupts with heart and heartache over the ferocious rhythm and star-time charisma of guitarist Billy Bungeroth, drummer Kevin Marks, keyboardist Andy Rosenstein, and bassist Ben Taylor. With a take-no-prisoners live attack and lyrics speaking of the torment and triumph of these tumultuous times, it’s no wonder that the Chicago Tribune called JC Brooks “the real deal”. This is a soul band rallying against our disaffected and disengaged era, connecting with people the old-fashioned way, by whipping them into a frenzy with honest appeal and unbridled enthusiasm.

The Uptown Sound has attracted a true-blue grassroots following, with MOJO Magazine identifying them as “one of the hottest US soul acts”. Since unleashing their Bloodshot Records debut “Want More” (“A lively set of gritty old-school soul and funk injected with raw garage-rock aggression” – KEXP), they’ve barnstormed North America and Europe relentlessly, while burning up NPR and AAA radio with their stomping cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” (which they performed with the song’s composer, Jeff Tweedy, at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival).

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound have toured, warred, scored, and they’re not to be ignored. Bear witness, for these young men are on the move and they know what post-punk soul looks like. It looks like the future.

Energetic and unabashedly romantic, The Duke of Uke & His Novelty Orchestra enchants audiences with witty lyrics, complex vocal harmonies and funky rhythms. Their infectiously optimistic sound draws from a wide range of influences… classical composers such as Bach, to tin pan alley ragtime tunes, to elements of gospel and Motown, to rock-n-roll artists of the ’60s and 70s. The unique combination of ukulele, violin, tuba, saxophone, bass, rock drums and latin percussion swing you from sweet to funky with a sound that will remind you of summers gone by, road trips to come, and long-lost friends you’ve never met.

Blower is the creation of Doug Evans, the Didjits’ former songsmith and all around baadasssss, Merilee666 (High Times and friend of Pat Longo) and a man named Jimmy Delp who pounds the drums like he is tenderizing them for a feast. Some bands are beyond compare and others beg you to pick them apart. Blower wear their influences on the side of their rod like the decals of many sponsors. Their combination of 70′s Heavy Rock, 80′s Heavier Rock and 90′s Heavy as Hell Rock combine to make the Heaviest Rock of the 3rd Millennium. If you look under the hood you may find Turbonegro, KISS, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, The Hellicopters, etc, as well as a gleaming Max Wedge.

They may call Bloomington, Indiana, home, but since their 2000 formation, Murder by Death have been a band without musical borders. Theirs is a world where Old West murder ballads mingle with rock-injected aestern classicism; where an album’s sequencing can take listeners from a haunted back alley in rural Mexico to a raucous Irish pub. All of which is to say, Murder by Death albums don’t just string together songs; they create experiences. With their fifth album (and second for Vagrant), Good Morning, Magpie, Murder by Death continue the tradition of border expansion that drove career standouts like 2006’s In Bocca al Lupo and 2008’s Red of Tooth and Claw.

Gaining fans across the world, Lionize takes pride in their original sound, DIY work ethic and fiery live shows.

Lionize continues to tour over 200 dates a year, having been tapped to open up for bands such as Clutch, Galactic, Steel Pulse and Bad Brains. Lionize also pulled double duty backing and supporting Lee “Scratch” Perry, garnering a slew of positive reviews.

Cursive is the longtime trio of Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar), Matt Maginn (bass), and Ted Stevens (guitar, vocals), with Patrick Newbery (keys) and Cully Symington
(drums). I Am Gemini (out February 21, 2012 via Saddle Creek), the band’s seventh LP, is the follow-up to 2009’s critically praised Mama, I’m Swollen, which caught the attention of publications including Alternative Press, Billboard, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and Time Out New York, among others, and earned the band their network television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. Cursive has released six full-length albums – including the heralded Cursive’s Domestica (2000), The Ugly Organ (2003), and Happy Hollow (2006) – two EPs, a disc of rarities, and numerous singles since the band’s 1995 inception.

The band is also known for their vital, magnetic live show, earning rave reviews from outlets including the Cleveland Scene’s C-Note music blog (”[Tim Kasher’s] effect on the crowd was chilling last night…Cursive was focused and on-spot, composed and gripping”), Nuvo Weekly (“…the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums”), and the Orlando Sentinel’s Soundboard blog (“…the band still knows how to rock on stage…[Cursive] thrashed away with an abandon that heightened the passion of Kasher’s dense, emotionally charged wordplay.”).

Gaining fans across the world, Lionize takes pride in their original sound, DIY work ethic and fiery live shows.

Lionize continues to tour over 200 dates a year, having been tapped to open up for bands such as Clutch, Galactic, Steel Pulse and Bad Brains. Lionize also pulled double duty backing and supporting Lee “Scratch” Perry, garnering a slew of positive reviews.

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and bandleader Fred Eaglesmith is a genuine iconoclast and true original. It’s the natural result of following the cue of his musical career and now 19 albums with the January 2012 release of 6 Volts. The result is one of the most fascinating and musically rewarding careers in contemporary music.

As he has doggedly gone his own way as an independent musical artist, Eaglesmith has also enjoyed such high profile rewards in recent years as having his songs covered by country superstars Toby Keith, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert, among many other accomplishments.

6 Volts is yet another landmark on a journey. The album takes its title from the battery that powered the game-changing transistor radio – introduced in 1954, the same year that rock-n-roll emerged into popular consciousness – and embodies the notion of back to the future. Captured live in the studio with one microphone onto a one-track reel to reel recorder like so many enduring classics, 6 Volts also bristles with contemporary urgency.

In February 1995, ZOSO, The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience was brought together in Los Angeles, California. Bound and determined to create the most mesmerizing and accurate portrayal of the original band, each individual member was selected to portray both the image and playing styles of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones. Together the quartet pays homage with its powerful and unmistakable Zeppelin sound.

Since its conception ZOSO has played a remarkable 2000 shows (and counting) in just under eleven years. Their passion, musical ability, showmanship and “we don’t cancel” attitude has made them America’s #1 certified Led Zeppelin show. If you missed Led Zeppelin live in the 70′s or are looking for a great chance to relive the Music, Magic and Mystery of Zeppelin, you must experience ZOSO. The sound and visual effects will astound you and bring you back to the “Hammer of Gods” era (from 1968-1980).

Bellies For Life is an annual all belly dance breast cancer fundraiser. Thanks to the special amazingly supportive community in Champaign-Urbana, almost everything required for this night is either donated or accounted for by volunteers (dancers, emcee, doorman, camera man etc). This minimizes the costs and maximizes the total donation. Other than money that BFL strives to raise, via this festive event, breast cancer awareness and encourage young women to perform self exams. This is a night of fun and entertainment, all the while for a extraordinary good cause.

The Magician EP (Stiff Slack), TLAT’s fourth overall release, is a fad-free snapshot of a band that’s constantly morphing from a dragon, to a butterfly, to blinding white light, to a bird, to Godzilla, and back again, often within the space of just one song. RIYLs don’t do the band justice from a recorded or live standpoint, but suffice it to say that the sound on the Magician EP puts them in company with artists like Pink Floyd, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Built to Spill and just a pinch of early U2.

Without a doubt, the mighty Reverend has won a cult following around the world these past 20+ years with a nearly endless touring ethic and musical style that’s equally as rooted in tradition as it is in breaking it. He’s one of the lynchpins of the neo-roots movement and responsible for moving the genre forward and garnering it a whole new generation of fans. Mix that with a mythic stage presence and you’ve got a live act that turns rock clubs into psychobilly tent-revivals across the country 300 days a year.

PRESENTED BY WWHP “THE WHIP” 98.3

<a href=”http://thehighdive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/FRED2012.jpg”><img title=”FRED2012″ src=”http://thehighdive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/FRED2012-225×300.jpg” alt=”" width=”225″ height=”300″ /></a>

The Mountain Sprout Band is the most authentic modern Ozark music available today. Hailing from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, four incredible musicians work seemlessly to bring forward the kind of bass thumping, banjo picking, guitar playing, fiddle shredding, that makes you get and stomp your feet. The lyrics present a variety of stories and jokes that resonate with drunk and sober listeners alike. If you are a hillbilly, a good ‘ol boy, or just a finely crafted music lover, Mountain Sprout is not to be missed! (KC MO News)

Ezra Furman &amp; the Harpoons have made numerous album of the year lists with their debut Banging Down the Doors and sophomore release Inside the Human Body. On top of all of this, Ezra Furman &amp; the Harpoons deliver live performances that will leave you buzzing with excitement.

On Gift Horse, their second album for Vanguard and fifth studio effort overall, Stephen Kellogg and his bandmates – Kit “Goose” Karlson (keys, bass, vocals), Brian “Boots” Factor (drums, vocals) and Sam “Steamer” Getz (guitars, vocals) – bring the rich legacy of American rock & roll into the present tense. This is thrilling music, muscular, immediate and life-embracing, steeped in tradition but addressing the present moment boldly and eloquently. To get to this point in their evolution, SK6ERS (as their loyal fans fondly refer to them) simply had to come to terms with their collective identity once and for all, and producer Mark Weinberg had a hand in getting them there.

“Every time you make a record, you learn a whole bunch of new things, and this was no different,” says Kellogg, who formed the Sixers with Karlson and Factor eight years ago in Western Massachusetts. “When we met with Mark, he encouraged us to be unapologetic about who we are, not masking our influences but embracing them and running with it. He kept reminding us, ‘You’re not gonna be Bob Seger if you spend your whole life trying. You’re Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, so just play this music the way you write, from your hearts.’”
